Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) & Submission Wrestling
Martial arts programs are an excellent way to help your child develop the character traits critical for success: discipline, respect, leadership, and more. Watch your child build the mental, emotional, and physical skills to navigate life and form strong, healthy, real-world relationships in a structured, positive, and supportive community.
The Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (joo-JIT-soo) & Submission Wrestling program at Freeport Martial Arts builds on the success of our Adults Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu & Submission Wrestling program, establishes Freeport Martial Arts as Freeport’s grappling headquarters, and brings the benefits of “the gentle art” to Freeport’s future leaders: your kids.
Classes follow a structured, consistent curriculum that provides your child with leadership opportunities as they advance and mature as martial artists. Through a range of exercises, drills, and “games,” your child will receive the regular physical, mental, and emotional stimulation needed to grow into confident, capable teens and adults. They will also step away from screens and the digital world, participate in a real-world community, and build relationships with other kids.
At Freeport Martial Arts, your child will learn more than martial arts for self-defense and sport; they will learn to navigate life, socialize and cooperate with other kids and adults, diagnose and solve complex problems, and lead a healthy lifestyle.
Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (Gi)
- Target Age: Kids (Ages 5 – 12)
- Uniform Requirement: Traditional Gi (Kimono and belt)
- Description: This class teaches kids traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu using the Gi. By learning to use the uniform’s grips for control, defense, and submissions, children develop strong problem-solving skills and mental focus. The curriculum balances essential self-defense tactics with sport Jiu-Jitsu, ensuring a structured, safe, and collaborative learning experience. Alongside physical techniques, kids are taught core martial arts values such as respect, discipline, and leadership that will serve them long after they leave the mats.
- Classes: Every Tuesday and Thursday from 5:15 PM to 6:00 PM
Kids Submission Wrestling (No-Gi)
- Target Age: Kids (Ages 5 – 12)
- Uniform Requirement: No-Gi (Rash guard/fitted t-shirt and athletic shorts/spats)
- Description: Designed for children, this class introduces the fundamentals of grappling without a traditional martial arts uniform (Gi). Focusing on movement, leverage, and body control, kids learn foundational wrestling and submission techniques, including takedowns, positional control, and escapes. In a safe, high-energy environment, children build functional fitness, self-defense skills, and unshakable confidence while learning to socialize, cooperate, and solve problems with their peers.
- Classes: Every Monday and Wednesday from 5:15 PM to 6:00 PM
All Ages Open Mat: Members & Non-Members
- Target Age: All Ages (Kids 5–12 & Adults 13+)

What parents and grandparents say
We’ve had a great experience with Freeport Martial Arts. Both of my kids are in the kids class, and they really enjoy it. John, the owner and instructor, is very patient and does an excellent job keeping the classes fun while still teaching discipline and skills. It’s a positive, supportive environment, and I’ve seen improvements in my kids’ confidence and focus. Highly recommend!

We joined Freeport Martial Arts under their free week trial. Our son who is almost 6 didnt really enjoy any other sports yet but he really took to this. Wants to go every night. I think it’s the environment, all the kids are really welcoming and John and Kate are great! Our son knew nothing going in. A+
Brandi
John is really patient with these kids. I’m truly impressed. Glad I brought my granddaughter here.

My 10 year old started taking jiu jitsu this year with John as the teacher. Highly recommend! John is a great teacher with expert level experience and knowledge, but most importantly he cares for the kids. He is able to teach them with patience and understanding, where the children feel safe to explore and learn. The environment is welcoming and you instantly feel like family/friends when you join. Hidden gem in Freeport for sure.

Freeport Martial Arts is a great place to start your child in Jiu-Jitsu! Clean establishment with informative classes led by John, who is an amazing instructor. He is passionate about teaching and very patient with the kids. He listens and also explains each lesson so everybody understands the how and why. He makes class fun and challenging at the same time! My daughter loves going to class every week! Highly recommend starting this journey to grow self-confidence, meet new friends, and have fun learning something new!

Freeport Martial Arts has a great instructor, John Garvens, who is passionate about teaching all kinds and ages of people. It’s a great place for beginners, even with zero experience. Our entire family enjoys going all week to exercise, burn energy, combat stress, and have a social outlet. The space itself is relaxed, clean, and calm, but it’s also a great group of people who will make you feel comfortable and welcome. Jiu-Jitsu has a laundry list of benefits that can be utilized for you or your child’s entire life, as a lifestyle with a built-in community. This is a perfect place to start that journey!
