Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Classes
Freeport Martial Arts offers Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes to men and women at all levels of experience.
What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a self-defence martial art and combat sport based on grappling, ground fighting and submission holds.
Wikipedia
The basic strategy of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or BJJ, follows a five-step process:
- close the distance with the opponent
- take the opponent to the ground
- control the opponent
- gain a dominant position
- use various techniques, including joint locks and chokeholds, to force the opponent into submission.
When the opponent submits, they will “tap out,” physically and/or verbally, to let their opponent know they have submitted.
In competition, a points system similar to wrestling is used to determine a winner in the absence of a submission.
Self-Defense Fundamentals
Self-Defense Fundamentals is a 12-week program repeated once per quarter that will help you build a foundational knowledge of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques from a self-defense perspective. The goal of the program is to ensure you develop the skills you need to defend yourself in real-world scenarios.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi / No-Gi
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi (with kimono) and No-Gi (without kimono) classes cover many of the same Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu strategies, techniques, drills, etc. Classes highlight the advantages, disadvantages, tradeoffs, and considerations of each scenario: with kimono and without kimono. Training with and without the kimono is important for your development as a student of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, as each discipline helps the other.
Open Mat
Open Mat provides an opportunity to practice techniques, execute drills, spar gi or no-gi, and more. There is no formal structure to Open Mat classes, but an instructor must be present to oversee training.
Equipment
At Freeport Martial Arts, we offer both gi (with kimono) and no-gi (without kimono) Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes, as both styles are important for your development as a student of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

What is Mixed Martial Arts?
Mixed martial arts, sometimes referred to as cage fighting, no holds barred, and ultimate fighting, and originally referred to as Vale Tudo is a full-contact combat sport based on striking, grappling and ground fighting, incorporating techniques from various combat sports from around the world.
Wikipedia
The basic strategy of Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA, follows a similar process but differs in that, at any time, an opponent can be knocked out with strikes or the referee can call a stop to the contest by declaring a technical knockout.
A points system is also in play in the event no knockout, technical knockout, or submission occurs.
