About Freeport Martial Arts
Freeport Martial Arts Academy opened in Freeport, Illinois, on October 25, 2022, to bring the Jiu-Jitsu community to Freeport and offer a fun way to learn martial arts, get in shape, and make new friends.
Freeport Martial Arts offers a full schedule of martial arts classes for adults, teens, and kids ages 6-12, including:
- Jiu-Jitsu & Submission Wrestling, often referred to as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or BJJ
- Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), which combines striking and grappling martial arts
- Kids Jiu-Jitsu, which develops traditional martial arts values with modern-day techniques
- Women’s Self-Defense, which addresses domestic violence and sexual assault scenarios

About John Garvens, Owner & Head Instructor
Freeport Martial Arts is owned and operated by John Garvens, an International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) Certified Black Belt under Professors Adem Redzovic, a Fourth-Degree Black Belt, and Clark Gracie, a Fourth-Degree Black Belt. He is the only IBJJF-certified black belt in Stephenson County.
